Summer Reading Begins in ONE week!
June 1st-July 27th

(Registration available June 1st on our website http://www.crlibrary.org or by stopping in either branch of the CRPL)
The Young Adult (6th-12th grade) Summer Reading Program “Choose Your Own Adventure” begins one week from today on Friday, June 1st! Sign up online or by stopping in and fill out your reading log to win amazing prizes. We have many free events this year and tons of great giveaways so be sure to come to the library in June and July to read and get rewarded. Look out for gaming, craftin’, zombies, Anime, authors, cooking, and great presentations! More information is available here and here, so check back for even more soon.
Speak Up! Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program
Sign up now for our FREE 9 week program presented by the Toastmasters called Speak Up! Learn more about communication while having fun in the air conditioning on Monday nights 
All participants will receive an aluminum water bottle and delicious snacks will be provided. If you’ve ever wanted to brush up on your public speaking skills while having fun with others, make sure you register online here or by calling the library at 398-5123 for Speak up! Spots are filling up fast so don’t delay – registration closes on May 31st.

Slide by Jill Hathaway
I am so excited that Slide by Jill Hathaway was released into the wild this week. Slide is an awesome debut mystery from an Iowa author, who we will be coming to visit the Cedar Rapids Public Library in July!
Slide is narrated by Vee Bell, a high school student with the unique ability to slide into others and see through their eyes. When she witnesses a murder, she goes full on Veronica Mars and starts to investigate with the help of her power to slide. I stayed up all night finishing this book – couldn’t put it down from the moment I started. Part mystery, it also combines elements of fantasy with realistic dialogue/characters and genuinely surprised me at the end. I loved Vee as she brought to mind my favorite kind of detective – teen girls ala Nancy Drew. I’ve been looking for something to fill my Veronica Mars void since I finished the DVDs and Slide was perfect – but left me wanting more! Luckily for all of us, Jill Hathaway is writing a sequel – so be on the lookout for that in the future.
Get in line for your copy through our catalog now – read it before the author comes in July, and stop in the YA area of the library to get a Slide bookmark signed by Jill Hathaway – get one before they are gone!

Celebrate the Chinese New Year with Crafts!
Chinese New Year Craft Celebration
On Tuesday, January 31st, our monthly Teens Create program will be dedicated to celebrating the Chinese New Year. We will be making some awesome paper lanterns and confetti popper rockets. Stop by anytime between 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Sendak room. Register online here or by calling the library at 398-5123 so we know how many tealights to get!

January Anime Club: Monster Craft Edition
On Tuesday, January 17th from 5:30-7:30 in the Sendak room, the CRPL Anime Club will be watching Naruto Shippuden and working on creating a Monster banner for the library from the book Me Make Monster by Jenny Harada. As always, there will be Ramen noodles and snacks, and possibly some circle time. Hope to see you there!
Vote for Movies for Mini Marathon!
On Sunday, October 30th the Cedar Rapids Public Library at Westdale will be hosting a Mini-Movie Marathon in the Sendak Room. Costumes are encouraged and there will be plenty of snacks, with door prizes drawn throughout the day. Open to 6th grade up through adult! The first movie will start at 1:15 and we will continue to watch until around 4:30. Our handy Teen Advisory Group members suggested a few titles, and I’ve thrown some random ones in the mix. Click on the images below to learn more about the films. The top title will be shown first, and the runner up will go on after. Winners will be announced on October 20th. News Flash! We have some of our Teen Advisory Group members posting on the BLOG. So thanks, TAG! Can’t wait to hear all about what you’ve been reading/watching/listening to over the summer.
Also, the Teen Summer Reading Program is coming to an end. We even ran out of our original prizes, so if you stop in between now and Sunday, be prepared to get some EXTRA coupons and goodies in your bags. You still have time to turn in your prize sheet, get your free book and bag, and get entered to win a NOOK or a bunch of other cool prizes. Good luck!

As part of our Teen Summer Reading Program, stop by between today and the 12th of July and get entered to win a pair of tickets to the midnight screening at the Wynnsong Cinemas on Edgewood Road. Wii Wednesdays in July
Did you know every Wednesday during July from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Sendak Room at the Westdale Library, we have Wii gaming on a BIG screen? The most popular games this summer have been Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Wii Sports Bowling, but we also have dance games, Rock Band, and much, much, more. Wii Wednesdays also include snacks, random prize giveaways, and generally a pretty good time, so stop by and play some of our resident gamers or beat me in Super Smash Bros Brawl (unless I play Kirby!). Open to all 6th-12th graders of any skill level
