Books You Love: Catching Fire

booksyouloveCheck out this excellent review entry from our Books You Love Contest:

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Cover Art for Catching fire I picked this book to review because of its in-depth description about the characters. There are three main characters names Peeta, Katniss, Gale. Gale is one character that isn’t thrown into the games.  It all starts when Peeta is one of the main boy characters who is thrown into the games in the first book. Haymitch says, “You know, you could live a thousand lifetimes and not deserve him.” This is a quote in the book that Haymitch say to Katniss about Peeta.  Katniss is the main girl characters who is also thrown into the game in the first book. These two are then thrown back into the games “I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now and live in it forever.” This is where Katniss is talking to Peeta about her feeling on their engagement. Katniss and Peta are being forced to get married because of what happened in hunger games. The first book has now been turned into a movie and has done really well in the box office. The target age group is for young adults and preteen people of all ages will love this book.   The book can be read by both boys and girls. I loved this book it kept my attention throughout the whole book and it was very interesting. This book was so amazing I gave it five stars because of the story line. This book has past all expectations it goes in depth on the story and how they survive in the wilderness. You should read this book because it is a great story about love and fear of the games. The main reason that I picked this book to read was because it was a great storyline that keeps people reading more. Before you read Catching Fire you should read the Hunger Games. The last book is Mockingjay and continues the story even more.

Books You Love: Divergent

booksyouloveCheck out this excellent review entry from our Books You Love Contest:

Divergent By Veronica Roth

Cover Art for Divergent This book takes place in future Chicago world where the city is split into 5 factions with different kinds of people in each.  Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligent), Candor (honesty), Amity (peace/friendship).  The main character, Tris, is  a 16-year-old girl who lives with her family in Abnegation. The way things work is when an age group teen turns 16, they all come together and have a choosing ceremony where the teen picks which faction they want to be apart of.  Most people stay in the faction they were born into, but some people transfer. if you transfer, you are basically disowning your own family and you never get to be with them again.  This is the first book in the series, and it goes through the struggles Tris faces when she switches factions to Dauntless.  She has to learn the ways of her new life, and try to make friends along the way.  This book is thrilling, humorous, and even a little romantic.  I recommend this book to anyone that liked the Hunger Games.  Some of my favorite quotes from this book are from the beginning when she is still trying to figure out what is going on in the Dauntless faction. -E.R.

“Tomorrow at the Choosing Ceremony, I will decide on a faction; I will decide the rest of my life; I will decide to stay with my family or abandon them.”  -Tris

“It will be difficult to break the habits of thinking Abnegation instilled in me, like tugging a single thread from a complex work of embroidery.  But I will find new habits, new thoughts, new rules.  I will become something else.”  -Tris

Books You Love: Going for the Record

booksyouloveCheck out this excellent review entry from our Books You Love Contest:

Going for the Record by Julie A. Swanson

Make a prediction about this title, and you’ll probably be wrong. Think sports books are just for boys? This generalization is not at all the case in this wonderful read. If you love touching books with suspenseful, jaw-dropping ending, you should think about reading this book.  The story begins with a tragedy for Leah, a teenage girl with a passion for soccer. Well, two. One right after another. She told her Dad she made it in the regional soccer team. Only twenty people made the team. After her Dad said he couldn’t come to her game, she was baffled and devastated simultaneously. Tragedy struck when her Dad told her about his terrible news.  The initial reason I think you should consider reading this book is that it’s a sports book that is very heart-felt and emotional. When I read this book, I could really connect with her and feel what she felt–even though I’m not athletic.  The second reason to read this book is that Julie A. Swanson, the author, begins with a shocking event that strikes Leah with a bang: “It knocks the wind out of me. From the inside out, a coldness seeps through my body, as if something at my very core has burst and is releasing itself, like one of those first-aid cool packs.”  Julie A. Swanson really pulls off something terrific with this book. I couldn’t stop reading, dying to know more about what was happening. If heart-wrenching, suspenseful books are the ones for you, go check out Going for the Record today! – K.R.

Thanks to the contestant who wrote this entry, we will be ordering a copy of Going for the Record for the CRPL.   If you have a recommendation for the library, submit your requests for purchase online here.

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

Cover Art for Eragon
In my book the main character, Eragon, finds a strange rock; this turns out to be a dragon egg.  He becomes the first dragon rider in a very long time.  Galbatorix is an evil dragon rider that took over the empire a long time ago and is still in charge.  He knows that Eragon is a dragon rider so he sent some “Ra’zac’ to kill him, but killed his uncle instead. Angered and distraught Eragon sets out with Brom to kill the “Ra’zac” that killed his uncle.  His dragon, Saphira, also accompanies with him on his journey, and is great use.  This book is really interesting, and I highly recommend this book if you like fantasy.  I recommend this book if you’re into fantasy because it has action, thrills and sadness.  This book shows lots of emotion like when Ergon’s uncle dies, he grieves and you can actually feel his sadness.  When Eragon gets beat up or hurt real bad, this book describes it really well and you can actually feel his pain.  This book is really exciting, it got me hooked with just a few chapters!  Eragon is my favorite character in the book because he is the same age as me, and can use magic. -B.M.

Books You Love: The Duff

booksyouloveCheck out this excellent review entry from our Books You Love Contest :

The Duff by Kody Keplinger

Cover Art for The Duff : designated ugly, fat, friend : a novel The Duff  is a book about girls self esteem.  The Duff is my favorite book I’ve ever read because the main character feels the same as me.  She feels  like Duff – the Designated Ugly Fat Friend.  She knows her friends are beautiful and Wesley the playboy tells her she’s the Duff.  Bianca Piper had good self esteem but being the “Duff”, she feels ugly.  As the book progresses, she begins to find herself, learning not to run away from all her problems and learning what love really is.  This is the best book I’ve ever read.  It’s helped me to learn that every girl feels like the Duff, including the popular people.  -S.W.

Books You Love: Percy Jackson and the Olympians series

booksyouloveCRPL’s  Books You Love Contest is going on now until February 16th.  Check out the excellent review entry below and learn more about the contest here.

The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan

Cover Art for The lightning thief The book series Percy Jackson and the Olympians is written from the view of a teenaged boy finding out who he is and his fate. This boy goes on a many adventures with his two best friends Grover and Annabeth. Grover is a saiter, which is a half goat half human. He is chosen to be Percy’s protector because he is no ordinary half-blood. Annabeth Percy’s other friend is the daughter of Athena the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy. They all embrace on an exhilarating quest.  At the half-blood camp the three friends make new friends (or so they thought). A change of fate comes along when one of their friends Luke changes sides. Now they must not only fight away monsters but who they thought was a friend. With all of Olympus counting on them can they do it?  I really enjoyed book by Rick Riordan. He also has a new spin off series Percy Jackson that includes new campers. This new series keeps you in the new action of the campers but does not exclude Percy, Annabeth and Grover. These book really got me into Greek mythology and was accurate  with all information and stories. With theses book you learn more than just what Percy is doing but also all about the other Greek  Gods and Goddess. Even the classic book of the Odyssey is referenced in these books. You get to read and have fun while learning actual stories and facts. That is a great thing that Rick Riordan did with his books. I highly recommend this book to all ages. – J.R.
