Summer Reading Program 2012

June 1st-July 27th

Register in the library or online

(Registration available June 1st on our website http://www.crlibrary.org)

6th-12th graders can participate by registering, reading three books, and turning in your reading log.  Bonus activities completed will gain you more entries to win prizes, including our grand prize, a Nook Color e-reader.

Participants can continue reading or attend library programs to earn chances for additional prizes.

Prizes will be available to participants beginning on June 11th.

One Time Events

June 6th – 3:30-4:30 Graphic Novels and Comic Book Art with  the University of Iowa Museum of Art

June 20th – 2:00-3:00 Wilderness Survival Skills with Linn County Conservation

June 29th – 6:00-8:30  Chronicles of Zombie Town:  Murder Mystery Theater and Extreme Facepainting

July 12th – 6:00-7:00 Improv Workshop with local comedy troupe Comics in Action

July 14th – 3:00 Jill Hathaway, author of Slide, visit and reading

July 20th – 7:00-8:45 Movie Night:  The Secret World of Arrietty

Ongoing Events

Speak Up!  Toastmaster’s Youth Leadership Program

Have fun and build your confidence. Enhance your communication and leadership skills. Toastmasters Youth leadership is a free, 9-week program that gives teens the opportunity to practice presentation skills by preparing speeches and giving impromptu speeches. Teens will also learn leadership skills like evaluating other speeches and chairing a meeting.

Sessions include:

  • Introduction to Chairmanship
  • Introduction to Public Speaking
  • Impromptu Speaking
  • Organizing Your Speech
  • Listening
  • Gestures in Speaking
  • Voice and Vocabulary

Experienced Toastmasters coach teens on aspects of public speaking and leadership. Sessions Monday evenings from 6-7:30 pm: June 4, 11, 18, 25 and July 2, 9, 16, 23rd and 30th. Snacks will be provided. Registration is required and limited to 20 people.

Good Eats:  Cooking in the Library

The Cedar Rapids Public Library is hosting a cooking program with the Linn County Extension Office called “Good Eats, Worldwide Treats“.  It will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 2:30-4:00 in the Sendak Room.  This program will feature some amazing recipes you can try again at home.  There will not only be Iron Chef-like challenges, but scavenger hunts, contests, raffles, and the best part…FREE FOOD!!!  If you like to cook, or even if you like to eat, please sign up for the program on the CRPL Event calendar here or call the library at 398-5123 to register.

Anime Club

June 19th – Meet manga artist of Dramacon, Witch and Wizard, and Night School Svetlana Chmakova via Skype 5:30-7:30

July 17th – 5:30-7:30 – Art contest and Cosplay

Third Tuesday of the Month 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Sendak Room

Cedar Rapids Public Library’s Anime Club meets once a month on the third Tuesday of the month. 7th-12th graders interested in screening Anime films are invited to eat snacks, work on manga and art, craft, and participate in contests. No registration in necessary, and you can find out more information here.

Game On @ the Library

Game On @ the Library is  open gaming for ages 10 and up. Stop by the Sendak Room to try your hand at Wii, X-Box Kinect, and more!

The Cedar Rapids Public Library Teen Advisory Group (TAG) will meet once a month to create programs, lend a voice, and help make a difference at the Cedar Rapids Public Library.  Find more information or apply online here.

High school club leaders Gaby and Rachel will lead book discussions and activities based on YA books.
